The University of Bologna ( Italian: Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna, abbreviated Unibo) is a public research university in Bologna, Italy. Founded in 1088 by an organised guild of students ( studiorum ), it is the oldest university in continuous operation in the world, and the first degree-awarding institution of higher learning.
L'université de Bologne atteignit son plein développement au début du xiii e siècle. En 1219, l'Église lui imposa un certain contrôle : désormais ce serait l'archidiacre de Bologne qui conférerait la licence.
L’université de Bologne est la plus vieille université d’Europe. Elle fut fondée en 1088 par des maîtres grammairiens, de logique et de rhétorique s’intéressaient à l’étude et à la transmission des connaissances relatives aux connaissances juridiques.
