Playing the Word Mike Melvoin Presents Dan Jaffe City Lights Poetic interest in music is understandable. After all, poetry has identifiably musical elements, particularly its use of rhythm. As the Beats starting improvising with their poetry, they would logically be drawn to improvisational music, namely jazz.

O’s Notes: This duo, Melvoin on piano and Jaffe with spoken word provide and interesting change of pace. The music is like a vamp with the lyrics speaking of jazz history mostly from Jaffe’s Playing The Word, a series of jazz poems. Among the best is “Starting With Langston”.
Mike Melvoin (May 10, 1937 – February 22, 2012) was an American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger. He served as chairman and president of The Recording Academy and worked as a prolific studio musician, recording with Frank Sinatra, John Lennon, The Jackson 5, Natalie Cole, and The Beach Boys.

Melvoin is a veteran pianist with a performance history that includes Frank Sinatra, Joe Williams, Peggy Lee and Bobby Watson. Jaffe has authored a dozen books and a jazz opera.
