Aside from Mozart, this City of Mozart gave birth to yet another great musical talent: Herbert von Karajan, born Heribert Ritter von Karajan on 5 April 1908 in Salzburg. As a music student, he attended the Mozarteum Conservatory.

Riccardo Muti conducted the Requiem for Karajan in Salzburg Cathedral. Herbert von Karajan had conducted almost 350 performances at the Salzburg Festival and shaped its fate for 40 years. Shortly before the end of the 1989 season, a new leading team for the Festival was introduced.
Karajan made his debut as a conductor in Salzburg on 22 January 1929. The performance got the attention of the general manager of the Stadttheater in Ulm and led to Karajan's first appointment as assistant Kapellmeister of the theater.
