Aarnoud Jan Anne Aleid, Baron van Heemstra (22 July 1871 – 30 December 1957) was a Dutch nobleman, jurist and politician. He served as mayor of Arnhem between 1910 and 1920, and Governor-General of Suriname from 1921 until 1928. Van Heemstra was the grandfather of Audrey Hepburn.
The Baron Aarnoud van Heemstra was mayor of Arnhem in Holland from 1910 to 1920 and served as the Royal Governor of that Dutch Colony from 1921 to 1928.
Van Heemstra was the first leader of Suriname to recognize the economic potential of the massive bauxite mineral reserves in the country. In 1922, the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) started bauxite mining in Suriname, and bauxite remains Suriname’s most important export in the 21st century.
Ella van Heemstra was a Dutch aristocrat and the third of five daughters of Baron Aarnoud van Heemstra, who was mayor of Arnhem from 1910 to 1920 and served as Governor of Suriname between 1921 and 1928.
