He played clarinet and alto sax in college with a concert band. In 1959 he began on bass while in the US Army while serving in the same unit as Elvis Presley . He worked with Andrew White in Washington after his discharge, playing in the JFK Quintet during the early 1960s.

And nothing about the performance suggests that the hard bop sax legend was anything but at the top of his game.

Walter Booker, né le 17 décembre 1933 à Prairie View au Texas et mort le 24 novembre 2006 à Manhattan, New York, est un contrebassiste de jazz américain. Il a accompagné notamment Julian Cannonball Adderley, Nat Adderley et Donald Byrd.
Il avait essayé plusieurs paires rythmiques avec les bassistes Walter Booker et Wilbur Ware, les batteurs Ed Blackwell, Art Blakey, Wilbur Campbell et Roy Haynes… Mais aucun d’eux n’était libre pour partir en tournée.
