As the fifth emperor of the Yuan, or Mongol, dynasty, he completed the conquest of China (1279) started by Genghis Khan in 1211 and thus became the first Yuan ruler of the whole of China.

His accomplishment was that much greater because he was a barbarian (in Chinese eyes) as well as a nomadic conqueror.
