As a musician, composer, performer and recording artist, Smith was considered a master of the Hammond B-3 organ for over five decades. He was featured on over 70 albums and has recorded and performed with a Who’s Who list of jazz, blues and R&B legends himself.

His death was confirmed by his manager Holly Case. The cause was pulmonary fibrosis. Smith was one of the funkiest and most inventive organists of all time.
