Tortilla flat est le quatrième roman que je lis de Steinbeck et cet auteur me plait de plus en plus. Présenté comme le livre le plus gai de l’auteur, il n’en reste pas moins assez émouvant par moment. Ce livre est découpé en chapitres, et chaque chapitre retrace une aventure, comme autant d’histoires dans l’histoire.

Tortilla Flat is the name of a neigborhood in the city of Monterrey. Full of ramshackle houses and people coping with their daily lives during the Great Depression, Steinbeck introduces a motley array of characters, or paisanos , the Spanish term he uses in the novel, who appear and disappear from a house inherited by one of the main characters giving way to the most unusual situations.
Tortilla Flat is one of those destinations that everyone should visit at least once. There is one restaurant, one patio bar/BBQ with some food items, museum, an ice cream shop/general store and gift shop. Bar stools inside are made of saddles. The regular band that plays outside is good and does a great job interacting with the crowd.
