En 1979, John Surman rejoint les rangs du label ECM avec l'album Upon Reflection. L'association avec la compagnie allemande indépendante va se révéler fructueuse avec les disques The Amazing Adventures of Simon Simon (1981), enregistré avec Jack DeJohnette ; le solo Withholding Pattern (1985) et Private City (1987), devenu l'un des classiques où il joue de tout.
