El cool-jazz (cool jazz en anglès) és un estil de jazz mesurat i subtil i que sovint abasta l'anomenat jazz o cool West Coast (de la Costa oest, ja que es va originar a Califòrnia). Va sorgir a finals de la dècada del 1940 , després del bebop , i es va desenvolupar al llarg de la dècada del 1950 , consolidant-se per un estil més reflexiu, inspirador i relaxat.

Cool jazz began in the late '40s, when innovators like Miles Davis and Woody Herman moved away from the frenetic complexity of bebop. Favoring a more subtle and melodic sound, pioneers including Gerry Mulligan and Lee Konitz launched a quiet revolution with relaxed tempos and harmonically rich melodies that attracted listeners who didn't dig the avant-garde directions other jazz forms were taking.
