Paunchy, bespectacled David (Colin Farrell, who piled on 40 lbs for the role) checks in and chooses to become a lobster if he can’t find the love of his life. Lobsters have a long lifespan, remain fertile and, what the hell, he likes the sea.
Set in the near future in what is presumably Ireland, the film opens with a woman driving down a road until she reaches a field with two small donkeys. She gets out of her car and shoots one of the donkeys until it is dead. We meet David (Colin Farrell) as he checks into the Hotel with his brother, who has been turned into a dog.

Il gusto per il grottesco non viene meno in The Lobster, anzi viene estremizzato. L’apparente calma piatta del film viene spezzata da una serie di eventi che stupiscono lo spettatore.
