16 oct. 2018 · Completed in 1897, for Hamilton McKown Twombly (1849-1910) and his wife Florence Adele Vanderbilt (1854–1952).Built by the sister of the men who put up The Breakers, Marble House etc., the Twombly's 102-room mansion - inspired by the "new" 17th century wing of an old English palace - was surrounded by parkland and a working farm.

She was the youngest daughter and seventh child of William Henry Vanderbilt (1821–1885) and Maria Louisa (Kissam) Vanderbilt. Her elder siblings were Cornelius Vanderbilt II, Margaret Louisa Vanderbilt Shepard, William Kissam Vanderbilt, Frederick William Vanderbilt, Florence Adele Vanderbilt Twombly, and Emily Thorn Vanderbilt.

She was the eldest daughter of William Henry Vanderbilt and Maria Louisa Kissam Vanderbilt. Her older brother was Cornelius Vanderbilt II and younger siblings William Kissam Vanderbilt, Emily Thorn Vanderbilt, Florence Adele Vanderbilt Twombly, Frederick William Vanderbilt, Eliza Osgood Vanderbilt Webb and George Washington Vanderbilt II.
In 1877, he married Florence Adele Vanderbilt (1854–1952), a daughter of William Henry Vanderbilt and Maria Louisa Kissam. They had four children: [1] Alice Twombly (1879–1896), [11] who died at the age of sixteen on the eve of her society debut.
