1 févr. 2011 · Of the 36 countries where the common hippopotamus is known to occur, 20 have confirmed declining populations, seven have populations of unknown status, nine have stable populations and three (Algeria, Egypt and Mauritania) have experienced recent extinctions (Lewison & Oliver, 2008 ).
We present data on hippopota-mus population abundance in the Mara Region since 1971, and compare the temporal patterns to those of sympatric megaherbivores (elephant Loxodonta africana, black rhino Diceros bicornis and giraffe Giraffa camelopardalis) over the same period.
