The Deardorff 8x10 is more or less the archetypal wooden field camera. Manufactured in Chicago, it comes in two flavors - with and without front swing. From what I understand they were made without front swing up until about 1950, and with front swing from then on until the eventual demise of the company in the 1980s.

30 juil. 1999 · Avedon's portraits in "In the American West" were taken with an 8X10 camera close to his subjects (so close he could almost touch them). This would suggest that he was not using a very long lens (300? 360?) and certainly not the traditional 1 1/2 to 2 times normal focal length lens for portraiture.
19 janv. 2009 · Avedon used 8x10 Deardorff cameras since very early in his career, and continued to use them for location jobs right up until his death in 2004. For studio work, however, in the early 1960s I convinced him to purchase a very expensive Swiss-made Sinar Norma 8x10 camera (photo, left).
