The Corleone family are fictional characters in both the novels and the films created by Mario Puzo, first appearing in his 1969 novel, The Godfather. They are an organized crime family originating from the Sicilian town of Corleone, and based in New York City .
The Corleone family was founded when Vito Andolini was accidentally given the name of his hometown upon his arrival at Ellis Island. By the 1930s, most of the family was involved in criminal activities and the Corleone crime family eventually became one of the most notorious in the United States.
