Israel López Valdés (September 14, 1918 – March 22, 2008), better known as Cachao (/ k ə ˈ tʃ aʊ / kə-CHOW), was a Cuban double bassist and composer. Cachao is widely known as the co-creator of the mambo and a master of the descarga (improvised jam sessions).

Contrebassiste, compositeur et chef d'orchestre cubain, à qui l'on attribue l'« invention » du mambo. De son vrai nom Israel López, il naît à La Havane (Cuba), le 14 septembre 1918, dans une famille de musiciens et est initié très jeune au piano, à la trompette et à la contrebasse.
