15 oct. 2019 · En 1797, David McLane, un marchand de chevaux originaire du Vermont, est arrêté pour avoir comploté en vue d’une insurrection au Canada. Après un procès expéditif, il est reconnu coupable de haute trahison envers la Couronne.
Il est condamné à mort et exécuté le 21 juillet 1797, et plusieurs arrestations de Canadiens français s’ensuivent. Mais c’est la victoire de l’amiral Horatio Nelson sur la flotte française à Aboukir, le 1er août 1798, qui mettra fin aux craintes des autorités.

David McLane (c. 1767-1797) was an insolvent architect-merchant, probably in his thirties, an American citizen, who had engaged in undercover subversive activity in Lower Canada (November 1796, May 1797) on behalf of revolutionary France.
