General William J. Palmer High School, commonly referred to as Palmer High School (PHS), is a public high school in Colorado Springs, Colorado, United States. It is the flagship high school of School District 11 and has the oldest International Baccalaureate (IB) program in the area.
With the building of Wasson High School in 1959, Colorado Springs High School was renamed William J. Palmer High School in honor of General William Jackson Palmer. Known best as a builder of railroads, but also as a successful businessman, military man and philanthropist.
William Jackson Palmer (1836–1909) was a military general, railroad tycoon, and founder of Colorado Springs. Though a Quaker from Delaware, Palmer fought for the Union Army during the Civil War.
In 1959, Colorado Springs High School was renamed William J. Palmer High School in honor of the city’s founder. America’s largest most active alumni association was established in 1984. Located at Bijou and Cascade, Old Stone School House was the first permanent school.
