Richard Newton Gardner (July 9, 1927 – February 16, 2019) was an American diplomat who served as the United States Ambassador to Spain and the United States Ambassador to Italy. He was also a professor emeritus of law at Columbia Law School. Life and career
Richard N. Gardner, a distinguished diplomat, former U.S. ambassador under two administrations, and longtime Columbia Law School law professor who shaped the careers of generations of students, died on February 16. He was 91.

Richard N. Gardner completed his service as U.S. Ambassador to Spain on July 12, 1997 in order to resume his post as professor of law and international organization at Columbia University, and to become counsel to the law firm of Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP.
A memorial service celebrating the life of former U.S. ambassador, Columbia Law School professor and Salzburg Global Fellow Richard N. Gardner will take place next month. The service is being held in Jerome L.Greene Hall, Columbia Law School, 435 West 116th Street, New York, NY, on Sunday, October 6, 2019, starting at 10 a.m.
