According to the Torah, Kehath (Hebrew: קְהָת, Qəhāṯ) or Kohath was the second of the sons of Levi and the patriarchal founder of the Kehathites, one of the four main divisions of the Levites in biblical times.
Kohath was the second son of Levi and the grandfather of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. The Kohathites were among the most important levitical clans, serving in the Tabernacle and the Temple, and participating in various historical events.

Kohath was the second son of Levi and the ancestor of Moses and Aaron. He led the Kohathites, one of the three divisions of the Levites, who carried the holy vessels of the tabernacle.

The Kohathites formed one of the three divisions of the tribe of Levi; the other two being the Gershonites and the Merarites ( Numbers 3:17 ). The Kohathites consisted of four families, the Amramites, the Izharites, the Hebronites, and the Uzzielites ( Numbers 3:19, 27, etc.).
