Pettiford is considered the pioneer of the cello as a solo instrument in jazz music. [4] [5] He first played the cello as a practical joke on his band leader (Woody Herman), when he walked off stage during his solo spot and came back, unexpectedly with a cello and played on that.

Pettiford plays a rhythmic, drum-like tone, pattern on cello that fits in well with the cymbal from the drums and the deep bass tones (0:03). This is a cool blues, nothing too out of the ordinary (0:24). The warmth of the introduction and melody in the horns leads well into the guitar tone of Tal Farlow (0:40).
