Niccolò and Maffeo are characters in the 1982 miniseries Marco Polo, played by Denholm Elliott and Tony Vogel, respectively. They are portrayed by Massimo Girotti and Mića Orlović in the 1965 movie Marco the Magnificent.
Niccolò Polo ( v. 1230 - v. 1294 N 1) et Matteo Polo (ou Maffeo, v. 1230 - v. 1309 N 2) sont des marchands itinérants vénitiens, plus connus comme étant respectivement le père et l'oncle de l' explorateur Marco Polo.
Niccolò and his brother Maffeo set off on a trading voyage before Marco's birth. In 1260, Niccolò and Maffeo, while residing in Constantinople, then the capital of the Latin Empire, foresaw a political change; they liquidated their assets into jewels and moved away.
Two years later, in 1271, Niccolo Polo and his brother, Maffeo, set off again, taking the 17-year-old Marco with them. This time they aimed directly for the court of Kublai Khan, to bring him documents from the pope and holy oil from Jerusalem that he had requested.
Marco Polo’s father, Niccolò, and uncle, Maffeo, continued this legacy. Traveling east as far as Mongol emperor Kublai Khan’s summer residence, Shangdu, they established friendly relations with him before returning to Europe as his ambassadors.
