In the past ten years, his fame has increasingly grown in Japan and Europe. This CD at last captured his annual Duke Ellington-Billy Strayhorn celebration in late April with equally legendary bassist Dave Young.

  4. Strayhorn saw Duke Ellington play in Pittsburgh in 1933, then met him in December 1938 after Ellington performed there again. He first explained, and then showed the bandleader how he would have arranged one of Ellington's own pieces.
