18 juin 2024 · We interviewed John Cale in issue #156 around the time of his previous release, Mercy. He has just released POPtical Illusion, a collection of synth and keyboard heavy tunes that carry a heavy, and at times angry message about the state of the world.

POPtical Illusion is a somewhat breezier affair that 2023’s Mercy, though one can assume that the songs were written at the same time, as Cale produced 80 songs during the Covid lockdown. There is an irreverence reminiscent of his Island years, an anger is still present.

Its emotional tenor, as Cale points out, is “snide,” and throughout the record, there’s an air of humor but also repressed rage boiling just beneath its poppy surface.
