Contrairement au EP We Die Young ainsi qu'au précédent album Facelift, Sap est un album composé de chansons avec des instruments acoustiques alors que la guitare électrique n'apparaît qu'en instrument secondaire [2].
Heart's Ann Wilson may be the best fitting vocalist on the album and provides some spooky backing harmonies on "Brother" and "Am I Inside." Unfortunately, the cameos by Soundgarden's Chris Cornell and Mudhoney's Mark Arm on "Right Turn" aren't quite as strong as one would hope.
