19 sept. 2016 · The pantoum is a poetry form that originated in 15th century Malaysia and drifted West in the 19th century with French writer Victor Hugo, among others. While it never quite took off like the Haiku, it never fully went away either and has been steadily blossoming among English poets.
The pantoum is a form of poetry similar to a villanelle in that there are repeating lines throughout the poem. It is composed of a series of quatrains ; the second and fourth lines of each stanza are repeated as the first and third lines of the next stanza.
History of the Pantoum Form. The pantoum originated in Malaysia in the fifteenth-century as a short folk poem, typically made up of two rhyming couplets that were recited or sung. However, as the pantoum spread, and Western writers altered and adapted the form, the importance of rhyming and brevity diminished.

It isn’t rhymed, and it doesn’t have any set lengths: the lines can be as long and short as you like, and the poem can have any number of stanzas. The essence of the pantoum form is a pattern of repetition of lines. In the first stanza, none of the four lines repeats.
17 mars 2017 · The interweaving of repeated lines in a pantoum suits the poem particularly well to ruminations on the past, circling around a memory or a mystery to tease out implications and meanings. The change in context that arises from the addition of two new lines in each stanza changes the significance of each repeated line on its second appearance.
