History. The current Latin seal was designed in 1931. The outer ring contains the words Sigillum Universitatis Dominae Nostrae a Lacu, which translates to “The seal of the University of Notre Dame du Lac.”. The English version of the seal evolved through the 1950s; the first trademarked use was in January 1963.
