Vocalese is the art of setting lyrics to recorded jazz instrumental standards (such as the big band arrangements of Duke Ellington and Count Basie), then arranging voices to sing the parts of the instruments.

Fils d'un pasteur, Jon Hendricks chante dès son enfance des negro spirituals à l'église avec son père. Il n'a que 11 ans qu'il passe déjà à la radio. Enfant prodige, il accompagne Art Tatum, ami de sa famille, à l'âge de 14 ans. Après son service militaire (1942-1946), Jon Hendricks travaille la batterie mais étudie également la littérature et le droit.
