4 avr. 2024 · The Sweet Inspirations started as a trio composed of Cissy Houston, Sylvia Shemwell, and Myrna Smith. They all met in a church choir in New Jersey and decided to form their own group. Later, Estelle Brown and Ann Williams joined the band, making it a quintet. Cissy Houston, the lead singer of the group, was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1933.
Myrna Yvonne Smith (May 28, 1941 – December 24, 2010) [1] was an American songwriter and singer. Smith became a high school English teacher in South Brunswick, New Jersey in the 1960s, while she also pursued her singing career. She was an original member of Dionne Warwick's Gospelaires group which later evolved into the Sweet Inspirations.

Sweet Inspiration is the title of a Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham composition written for, and first recorded in 1967 by, the Sweet Inspirations. It became a Top 20 hit reaching #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the spring of 1968, and a live version by Barbra Streisand , in medley with " Where You Lead ", would also become a Top 40 hit.
