Sadi Carnot est né à Limoges en 1837 d’une famille bourgeoise qui a donné de nombreux savants et hommes politiques à la France. Il tient son curieux prénom de son grand-père Lazare Carnot, qui joua un rôle important pendant la Révolution française et qui admirait le poète persan du XIIIe siècle, Saadi de Chiraz.
