Gli inizi, i singoli «indie» e l'album di debutto Sophisticated Boom Boom. I Dead or Alive, noti anche con il breve acronimo colloquiale DOA, scritto anche D.O.A. (da non confondere con l'omonima band punk dei D.O.A.), nascono nel 1980 a Liverpool da un'idea di Pete Burns, incoraggiato da una serie di produttori musicali locali a mettere su un gruppo e sfruttare il suo look oltraggioso.
